For the 09/10 season, black ice embraces the dark wonder
of the night in a long program set to the timeless Moonlight
Sonata.
"O wild and wondrous midnight, There is a might in thee,
To make the charmed body, Almost like spirit be, And give
it some faint glimpses, Of immortality" James Russell, Lowell, Midnight
Daylight fades to night and the silver moon rises, illuminating
the skaters’ haunted faces. Floating effortlessly through
interacting lines, it is clear that the team aches for that
which will sustain them: the chance to skate a beautiful program.
And yet, as they perform an ethereal circle moving seamlessly
from two circles to one, it becomes apparent that there is
something strange in this moonlight. The skaters attempt to
ward off all sinister thoughts with a sublime angled intersection
followed by breathtaking group lifts but they can only ignore
the revealing power of the moon for so long. The team begins
the no-hold block with twizzles, rockers, and brackets. Difficult
steps are executed with sure edges and delicate grace, but
as they turn to mirror each other, they finally recognize
the heartbreaking truth in the eyes of their teammates: they
are ghosts, lingering in the night. Belatedly mourning their
own demise and the program they will never perform, the skaters
move from divine Ina Bauers to wonderful outside spread eagles.
Two wheels dreamily transition to a double parallel wheel
as the team continues with their program, determined to skate
on despite their sorrow. The team moves through an unwavering
block sequence displaying unforgettable speed and exquisite
technical skill. But more importantly, as the program draws
to a close, the skaters realize that though they may be but
ghosts charmed by the moonlight, they have skated the beautiful
program they have always yearned for. That with this enduring
long program, they are whole and, on this night, they are
immortal.
