In their 05 / 06 short program, black ice junior performs to ‘The Show Must Go On’, a dramatic piece from Bas Lurman’s musical motion picture Moulin Rouge, demonstrating solid technical difficulty with elegant and sophisticated choreography.

Behind the curtain at the infamous Moulin Rouge, the team prepares to perform. Overwhelmed by emotion, Satine; the character the team is portraying, is forced to sever ties with a fellow actor who is her one true love. But…“The Show Must Go On” and so the team begins with a powerful traveling circle, depicting the whirlwind of events that Satine encounters. The program builds in intensity with the technically difficult line element. The intersections display softness and vulnerablity as the skaters express the feeling of the lyrics “Inside my heart is breaking, My makeup may be flaking, But my smile still stays on.” Following the intersections, the program surges upward with a block that incorporates twizzles, chocktaws and double-threes at incredible speeds. Maintaining the flow of the block, the team transitions into a traveling parallel wheel and three-spoke wheel. With the sudden stop and final breath of the program, the audience is left wondering what will ever become of Satine and her true love?

Do you remember your first skating dress, first solo or first competition? For the 05 / 06 season, black ice junior takes us all back to the days when we were little girls experiencing the many firsts in our skating careers! A refreshing free program that will have you laughing from the moment the skaters take the ice.

Standing in a huddle, the girls hear the music and fear takes over them – not to mention the sight of the audience and judges! But then, the little girl who likes to show off, takes over and the team begins! Following a variety of solid technical elements, combined with difficult step sequences, the team reverts back to that little girl part way through the program. How funny did we all look trying to do spirals when our legs couldn’t get higher than our knee, or making a “choo-choo” train on our Canskate sessions? What about landing our first waltz jump? And of course, forgetting that we are in full view and picking our dress from… well… where it is stuck in the wrong place! This playful part in the program is full of humour and fun. Keep your eyes open as there is a lot to take in. As the program comes to a conclusion, the little girl adds her final touches: blowing kisses to the crowd, wiping the snow off her blades and throwing it, plus summersaults! Creative, innovative and fun! We hope you enjoy watching the program as much as the team loves skating it.

In their 04 / 05 short program, the black ice junior team perform to “Les Sans Papier”, music from the French musical Notre-Dame de Paris. This sophisticated program weaves a darkly romantic spell while each element possesses a high level of difficulty. The block incorporates one-foot rockers, double twizzles and flying choctaws into its innovative choreography. Unique transitions, like the entrance into the triangle intersection, hold the audience’s attention while accentuating the music. The drama of this program and the intensity with which the team skates, will have the audience on the edge of their seats from the first bell to the haunting choral voices at its conclusion.

For the 04 / 05 season, the black ice junior team presents Romeo and Juliet, a program whose choreography depicts disguise, romance, confrontation, misunderstanding and tragedy – all in the name of true love.

The stage is set in Verona, Italy. Movements in isolation open the first scene with combination spins and incredible death spirals foreshadowing the love and tragedy that is to follow.

Two powerful households, the Montagues and the Capulets, have been feuding for countless years. The traveling parallel and two-spoke wheels along with the interacting and pivoting lines represent the deepening tension and chaos into which these families will be catapulted as their teenage children fall for one other…

The Capulets throw a masquerade party, at which no Montague is welcome. A young, handsome Montague by the name of Romeo defiantly attends the party in disguise. It is here that Romeo first spies Juliet; the beautiful Capulet daughter. Her entrance into the party and the attraction of the couple are captured in the no-hold step sequence.

“Oh Romeo, Romeo, where fore art thou Romeo?” In the balcony scene, the most famous love scene of all time, Juliet confesses her love for Romeo to the heavens. Romeo hears her confession and they are united to spend a magical night together. Beautiful, flowing edges and seamless transitions depict their powerful love affair. The next day the two are secretly married. The music builds to portray their union as the team executes a triangle intersection followed by a circle with deep edges, a difficult step sequence and elegant choreography. The spectacular vocals in the slow piece serve to remind the audience of how wonderful love can be.
The music changes to powerful chanting as we head into the final scene. A traveling circle-within-a-circle represents the emotional whirlwind that begins when Romeo is confronted by a gang of Capulets, furious with his unwelcomed attendance at the party. Romeo avoids this conflict, but when his friend is killed in the encounter, Romeo kills a Capulet to avenge his death. Banished from Verona for his crime, Juliet finds herself devastated with the loss of her love.

Juliet's father, not knowing of his daughter's marriage to Romeo, betroths her to another man. In despair, Juliet drinks a potion that mimics death. Her body is laid in the Capulet burial vault, awaiting Romeo’s rescue. But her plan fails and before Romeo is informed of the hoax, he hears that his beloved Juliet is dead. Overcome with grief, Romeo rushes to Juliet's tomb. A final powerful block with multiple configurations and technically difficult step sequence demonstrates Romeo’s rising panic. Inside the vault, Romeo drinks his own deadly poison, taking his last breath next to his sleeping wife. Moments later, Juliet awakens to see her husband's dead body. Realizing what has happened and with no reason left to live, Juliet kills herself.

“A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life”.

Vincero is an emotional and inspirational piece from Puccini’s renowned opera Turrandot. It expresses, through its stirring melody and haunting vocals, the struggle of a beautiful young girl in search of true love. The skaters strive to convey the emotion of the music with the conviction of their movements. The elegant, sweeping artistry of the opening no-hold circle challenges the skaters to maintain even spacing while performing a sequence of edges and turns. The powerful interacting lines demonstrates a high degree of risk and speed, while the no-hold block gains tremendous momentum despite its intricate choreography. The seamless transitions and moving artistic impression throughout, will keep the audience mesmerized until the program’s final second.

The free program was inspired by Disney’s recent movie Pirates of the Caribbean. The skaters portray the roguish yet charming Captain Jack Sparrow, a pirate who sails the Caribbean in search of fortune and mischief. The scene is set as the girls take their opening position, forming the shape of a pirate’s ship. Standing on the prow of the vessel, the team surveys the ocean through a thick and swirling fog. The adventure begins as the skaters playfully evade military capture with some fast and cunning footwork. Back at sea, deep edges evoke the rolling ocean waves and communicate Jack’s melancholy over the loss of his beloved ship, the “Black Pearl”. Taking action, Jack sets forth to recapture the ship, and solve the mystery of the curse. The story culminates in a battle with the cursed pirates that has the team racing down the ice, swords flashing and skates blazing. Will this eccentric pirate conquer all and regain his ship? Watch as the tale unfolds...

MYSTICAL WIZARDS

Spells charms and pixie dust were woven throughout the 03 / 04 pre-novice program. Swirling circles, pair spirals, and rolling lines create a unique layout on the ice. The whimsical music allows the team to tell a story with their skating. Performing as Mystical Wizards, the skaters' goal was to cast a magical spell on the audience. What spell? To give the team gold, of course!

Skating to a wonderful composition from the musical 'BIG', the black ice juvenile team’s 05 / 06 program is all about being a kid and having fun. This year, we have incorporated more technical difficulty: a triangle intersection with turns rotating in opposite directions, a circle within a circle that travels, a spin element and moves-in-the-field that include both outside spread eagles and sit spins! With creative choreography and bright costumes, the girls smile all the way through the performance and hope that you do too!

The 04 / 05 black ice juvenile team is comprised of sixteen enthusiastic skaters, ranging in age from eight to thirteen. Playful music from Cirque du Soleil inspires the team in its portrayal of a happy character who acts without the use of words... a Mime. Black and white dresses with a splash of hot pink creates a bold and unique look for the team. The program includes of a variety of lines, wheels, arm holds and footwork. The box intersection was a new challenge and accomplishment for the team. A wonderful finale incorporates a movement in isolation element, allowing the girls’ individual skating skills to shine.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

The 03 / 04 pre-juvenile team was comprised of twelve enthusiastic skaters ranging from age seven to eleven. Wearing bright yellow dresses that streamed colourful ribbons and bows, the team looked like every little girl's birthday dream. Performing blocks and wheels, lines, circles and splices in addition to plenty of footwork, this program was fun for the girls and a party for all!
