HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS
92 / 93 black ice began as a dream
a dream to create an organization whose sole purpose was the development
of an elite senior 'precision' skating team. Sisters Cathy Dalton
and Susan Pettes, each having coached teams to the top of the podium
at the Canadian Championships, decided to combine their talents
and experience. The result was a team called black ice...a
team they hoped would be, like black ice, unexpected and dangerous.
As a new-comer in the world of precision skating, black ice
attracted skaters who sought opportunity and challenge. The opportunity
was to create something great and the challenge was to make this
dream a reality.
When black ice stepped onto the ice at their very first
competition, the crowd knew that this team was something unique.
Each girl wore a different coloured dress, creating a stunning rainbow
effect. Skating to high-energy dance music, the team performed the
ever-changing and colourful patterns of a 'kaleidoscope'. After
a great deal of hard work and a good dose of fun, black ice
was thrilled to finish their first year with a silver medal at the
Canadian Championships.
95 / 96 The first World Challenge Cup was held
in Boston, Massachusetts. As the second place team in Canada, black
ice was one of two teams sent to represent the country. It
was with great pride that black ice took the ice as the
first team to skate at the first world competition in synchronized
skating. Coaches and skaters alike were overjoyed to be awarded
the bronze medal.
96 / 97 In a year that proved that dreams really
do come true, black ice danced its way to the top of the
podium with their memorable 'swing' program. Winning their International
assignment, the Canadian Championships and the World Challenge Cup,
all for the first time and in the same year, was a testament to
the team's dedication and hard work.
97 / 98 black ice formed its first junior
synchronized skating team. This team won all three Junior Canadian
Championship titles in its three year existence.
99 / 00 The first official World Championships
were held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As Senior Canadian Champion,
black ice was sent to the event as Team Canada 1. Competing
against 21 teams from 17 nations, black ice was awarded
the silver medal at this historic event.
02 / 03 black ice reinstated its junior
team with a vision to create an environment of progressive training.
03 / 04 black ice alumnus and World Challenge
Cup Champion, Stephanie Klein, returns to the black ice
family as coach of the junior team. black ice increases
the depth of its organization through an affiliation with the Unionville
Skating Club's Synchronized Skating Program, resulting in the first
black ice pre-juvenile and pre-novice festival teams.
05 / 06 black ice junior gets a
new name and identity under the direction of Stephanie Klein: Aura.
07 / 08 black ice joins True Sport:
an independent, national, charitable organization that works on
behalf of CCES and Athletes CAN to ensure that sport makes a positive
